An alternate theory suggests that the name originates from the ancient Korean wordDansleor, meaning "vast and wide land," and was later adapted into Chinese characters. The northern region of Gyeongsangbuk-do has historically been influenced by traditional Confucian culture, which led to a strong preference for male offspring. Yecheon, in particular, held the highest male birth ratio in the country for several years since the 1980s. However, with the gradual weakening of this cultural preference, the county now maintains a more balanced gender
