About Yaeyama Islands
The Yaeyama Islands are the most southwestern part of Japan, closer toTaiwanand evenBatanesof thePhilippinesthanOkinawa Island, much less the mainland. In 1771, the islands were hit by a massive tsunami up to 30 meters high, which killed over 8,000 people outright on Ishigaki alone and led to severe famine as saltwater contaminated fields. Several islands have large boulders inland, which are said to have been carried there by the tsunami. While most of the Okinawa islands belong to the subtropical climate, Yaeyama Islands belong to the tropical rainforest climate which results in the winter temperature being 2-4 Celsius degrees higher than onOkinawa Islandand the other islands in the northern part of the Okinawa archipelago.
