About Western Maryland
Western Maryland, also known as the state's panhandle, is the most remote section of Maryland, and most popular among tourists for its mountainous natural beauty. Culturally, if theEastern Shoreis Southern, andCentral Marylandmore of a transition zone, Western Maryland is decidedly Appalachian, with a strong economic history of mining. The region contains some of the country's earliest federal infrastructure projects, including the National Road, which was used by thousands of pioneers heading west, the C&O Canal, and the B&O Railway. During the Civil War, Western Maryland saw fierce fighting, including the 1862 Battle of Antietam, a turning point for the Union.
