About Voyages of Ibn Battuta
Ibn Battuta came from a family of legal scholars, and he was trained in that field. At age 21, he set out fromTangierfor hishajj, the pilgrimage toMecca, and continued travelling until his forties, mostly in the Islamic world, India andimperial China. He documented his journeys inthe Rihla– always with the definite article, becauserihlais a genericArabicword for a travelogue. However, many scholars are uncertain if he visited all of the places mentioned inthe Rihlaor whether he based some of his descriptions on hearsay, and whether he visited them in the order provided in the book. The University of California Berkeley has a goodonline accountof Ibn Battuta's travels. Our text below is based on that.
