About Via Appia
It is one of the earliest and strategically most important Roman roads of the ancient republic. It connected Rome to Brindisi, in southeast Italy. The road is named afterAppius Claudius Caecus, the Roman censor who began and completed the first section as a military road to the south in 312 BC during theSamnite Wars. The Via Appia Antica is considered to be the "longest museum in the world". For 18 km, from thešPorta Capenaat the Circus Maximus tošFrattocchie, the oldest Roman consular road, partly still with its ancient pavement, has been preserved.
