About Vesuvius
Mount Vesuvius is best known internationally for its eruption in ancient Roman times (24 August 79 AD), described byPliny the Younger, whenPompeiiandHerculaneumwere destroyed. The eruption left a large crater that can still be visited today. Vesuvius is a volcano that occasionally emits streams of lava (the last minor eruption in the 1950s, although its relative quiescence could be an indication of a build-up of pressure and a coming explosive eruption).
