From Fort Benton to the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, the monument spans 149 miles of the Upper Missouri River, the adjacent Breaks country, and portions of Arrow Creek, Antelope Creek, and the Judith River. The Missouri is the longest river in the United States, flowing more than 2,500 miles from its source on the eastern slope of theRockiesnearThree Forks, Montana, to its confluence with theMississippi RiveratSt. Louis,Missouri. The Breaks country was a model for many of the paintings done by painter Charles M. Russell.
