About Torngat Mountains National Park
The Torngat Mountains are named for the Inuktitut wordtorngait, meaning "place of spirits". The largest and most remote national park inAtlantic Canada, Torngat covers 9,700 km² (3,700 sq mi) of Arctic Cordillera from Cape Chidley south to Saglek Fjord. This is Inuit country, as it has been for thousands of years. The national park was created as part of theNunavik Inuit Land Claims Agreementwhich came into effect in 2008. Under the agreement, Inuit people (formerly called "Eskimos", a term that is offensive to many Inuit) can continue hunting, fishing and trapping within the park boundaries.
