About Tankwa Karoo National Park
Established in 1986, Tankwa Karoo National Park lies in one of the most arid regions of South Africa, with some areas receiving less than100mm (3.9in)of rainfall on average per year. The park is home to a large variety of birds (as of 2015, about 188 species), such as the black-headed canary, Ludwig's bustard, and the black-eared sparrow-lark. Peak birding season is August to October when the land bursts with wildflowers. The park has started the reintroduction of game that used to be found naturally in the area.
