Sovetsk, namedTilsituntil 1946, is at the confluence of the Tylzha and Neman rivers in the historic region of Lithuania Minor, sometimes referred to as Prussian Lithuania. The town grew up around a castle of the Teutonic Knights and received town privilegiers in 1552. Over the years, the town has been part of Russian, German and Polish empires.
