On 12 September 1950, South Sumatra province was established with a larger territory than it is today calledSouthern Sumatra, as it encompassed the southern third of Sumatra island covering areas that were eventually formed into separate provinces:Lampungwas carved from the southern part of the province in 1964,Bengkulufrom the coastal western part of the province in 1967, andBangka Belitungon 4 December 2000.
