About Sonoma Valley
Sonoma Valley is an international tourist destination, but, unlike its glitzy and more famous neighbor ofNapa Valley, to the east, it is known for its rural landscapes, casual style, and slightly more affordable prices. Historically, Sonoma Valley was called the Valley of the Moon by the Indigenous peoples who resided in the area and lived here for more than 12,000 years prior to contact with Spanish, Mexicans and Americans. In 1824, the last and northern-most Spanish mission was built in Sonoma. It is maintained today, along with numerous buildings in the area, by California Parks and Recreation, as a state park.
