Saint-Basile-le-Grand was founded in 1871. In 1996, Saint-Basile-le-Grand celebrated its 125th anniversary. The village of Saint-Basile-le-Grand straddles Route 116 and the railway. The centre of the village (intersection of rue Principale and Montée Robert) is3.5km (2.2mi)northwest of the Richelieu River and equidistant from the centre of theMont-Saint-Bruno National Park. Route 223 runs along the west bank of the Richelieu River. This road turns out to be a beautiful panoramic circuit allowing you to admire the course of the river, its rural area, its built heritage (a hybrid of rustic and modern) and its nautical environment.
