Rutland is England's smallest ancient county, having been reinstated to Unitary Authority status on 1 April 1997. The county has two historic market towns, Oakham and Uppingham, and numerous villages in a rolling, rural landscape. It also has a large reservoir in the middle of the county, and is popular for boating.
