About Ruse
The city's name is pronounced with two syllables - ROO-seh. In 19th-century sources, it shows up with the Turkish form of the name - Rustchuk (roos-CHOOK, Turkish: Rusçuk), including in the 1911 edition ofEncyclopaedia Britannica. With a population of more than 120,000 (2021), Ruse is the fifth largest Bulgarian city (afterBurgas), and the administrative centre of Ruse Province. By area, it's one of the smallest provinces of Bulgaria, and it has no other settlements larger than 10,000 people.
