The city's name is pronounced with two syllables - ROO-seh. In 19th-century sources, it shows up with the Turkish form of the name - Rustchuk (roos-CHOOK, Turkish: Rusçuk), including in the 1911 edition ofEncyclopaedia Britannica. With a population of more than 120,000 (2021), Ruse is the fifth largest Bulgarian city (afterBurgas), and the administrative centre of Ruse Province.
