Ribe Travel Guide — Things to Do, Food & Hotels
town in Denmark
About Ribe
Ribe is centered around the Ribe River (Ribe Å), and all of the old town actually stands on 3 islands in the river. It is the oldest town of Denmark; there's archeological evidence that it was an important market place in the 8th century. The firstchristian churchinScandinaviawas built here in 860, and construction of the current cathedral started in 1150. As the river and the harbor became inaccessible to ships during the 17th century, the importance of the town declined; today it sports around 100 old listed houses, far more than anywhere else in Denmark outside ofCopenhagen.
