county seat of Crawford County, Wisconsin, United States
About Prairie du Chien
Another place discovered by Marquette and Joliet in 1673 during their quest to find a way to the Mississippi, where they met Fox Indians living there with a chief whose name meant "dog" or "chien" in French, this town passed through French, British, and American possession over the course of time. It was also the site of Fort Crawford where the Fox and Sauk nations ceded much of their land in a treaty.
