The route has been officially opened since 1983. Although it is not the longest long distance walking route in the Netherlands, it is the most famous one. The official websitePieterpad.nland the guidebooks are only available in Dutch, but the route instructions are easy to understand. The route is increasingly integrated in regional route markers. This method may be different from one region to another, but is generally quite uniform. The entire route is marked with white-and-red markings, with white above red.
