About Perry (Florida)
The city, which is approximately50mi (80km)southeast ofTallahassee, has had two major, unfortunate events in history. The Perry Race Riot took place in late 1922, during which the white population of the city attacked Perry's black community, bringing about multiple lynchings; and in 1998, a fire at a natural gas plant turned into an explosion, causing the hospitalization of multiple firefighters, the destruction of several houses and vehicles, and evacuation of homes. The area around the city has a subtropical climate as is typical in northern Florida.
