Often calledOccitaniain English, the administrative region was created in 2016 by territorial reform from the smaller, but well-known regions of Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées. Historically, these lands wereOccitan-speaking rather than Francophone. Occitan, also known as thelangue d'Oc / lenga d'òc, after the language's word foryes, had a distinctive literary culture in the late Middle Ages surrounding thetroubadoursof court. They performed lyrical poems about chivalry and courtly romances, and became fashionable across southwestern Europe. In religion, too, Occitans found a way to distinguish themselves, in Catharism.
