About New South Wales
The home of a large number of Aboriginal tribes for thousands of years, New South Wales was only settled by Europeans in 1788 - spreading outwards from Sydney. The name was given by Captain Cook 18 years earlier during his first voyage of discovery, after the country ofWales. It is unknown whether he intended to name it afterSouth Wales, or whether this new land was theWales of the South, but the cliffs he was passing to the south ofSydneybear a striking resemblance to the cliffs along the Welsh Cambrian Coast. When the Colony of New South Wales was established, it practically included the eastern two-thirds of mainland Australia, Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania), New Zealand, and a few Subantarctic islands.
