New Jersey's geography varies across the state. Much of the northern half of the state is made up of the easternmost hills of theAppalachian Mountainsand other small ridge lines. Between these ridges lie the fertile river valleys that give New Jersey its "Garden State" nickname. High Point, at the border with New York inSussex County, is the highest mountain in the state at1,803ft (550m). The southern half of the state is part of the Atlantic Plain, and as such is very flat.
