Ancient Steps: The earliest known inhabitants on the land now known as Mustang Island were the Karankawa indigenous people. The Karankawa were a hunter-gatherer people, and they lived off the shellfish and mussels they caught in the Gulf. Too, the Karankawa were known as cannibals.
