About Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve

Mistaken Point contains the richest and best preserved Precambrian fossils known in the world. The site was discovered in 1967 by Shiva Balak Misra, then a student at Memorial University of Newfoundland, as part of his master's thesis when he found theFractofusus misrai. The results were published in the journal Nature in 1968 and the fossil was named after him in 2007. The site was recognized in the 1980's as an important site with possibly the oldest multicellular animal fossils in North America and the oldest deep-water fossils in the world. Subsequently, in 1987, a 5 km strip of coastline was declared a nature reserve because, according to a study, this area is the oldest biota with the one of the oldest known Ediacaran fossils, in fact the site with the oldest complex-structured organ
