About Missouri
Missouri is traditionally considered to be of theSouth, as-well as theMidwest. The name is pronounced "mizz-UR-ee" or "mizz-UR-uh", although the latter is very seldom heard outside of Missouri. The United States acquired Missouri as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Missouri was admitted as a slave state as part of the Missouri Compromise of 1820. Thehistory of slavery in Missouribegan in 1720, predating its establishment as a state. During theAmerican Civil War, Missouri was a hotly contested border state populated by both Union and Confederate sympathizers.
