After independence, refugees from East Pakistan (nowBangladesh) began to settle the area. Although not a tourist attraction itself, the city is a gateway to theDooarsregion of West Bengal. Attractions accessible from the city includeGorumara National ParkandChapramari Wildlife Reserve, as well as the picturesque villages of Jhalong, Bindu, Samsing and Suntalekhola.
