The lake is most likely named after the Japanese stringed instrumentbiwa, whose shape resembles the lake. The entire lake is now designated as a protected Quasi-National Park. The lake is an important water source for Osaka megalopolis area. Shiga people jokingly threaten Osaka people with "We can stop water from Lake Biwa at any time...". Osaka people reply, "Flood yourself".
