The town was calledGurganchfrom the 10th century CE onward and is now called Konye Urgench (Old Urgench), as the inhabitants moved to modernUrgenchinUzbekistanin the 17th century. While the exact date of the city's founding is unknown, historical records indicated that it existed in some scope before 712, which is when Arab forces conquered it.
