About Kastelruth
The earliest mention in history is the name "Castelruptum" in church records. This dates back to 982–987 AD. Before this date, there was a settlement in the area, but the name has not survived in the historical record. Mentions of Castelvecchio castle date back to the Middle Ages. Today only the ruins of a massive square tower remains, as well as some traces of walls, and brick huts. In the 13th century the area became the property of Count Mainardo II of Tyrol-Gorizia. After a few more ownership changes, at the beginning of the 15th century the castle and the village became the property of the Hauenstein family and it is from this period that the first large permanent farms were established in the area.
