Jining is a prefecture-level city in southwestern Shandong province. The city has around 200,000 inhabitants and a prefecture of around 8 million. The city is located right to the north of Nanyang Lake (南阳湖 Nányáng Hú) and is today the northernmost city reachable by navigation on theGrand Canal. The birthplace of Confucius,Qufu, is in the prefecture. Jining is known as the canal capital and the hometown of Confucius and Mencius. It is located in the hinterland of southwestern Shandong, at the junction of the Huanghuaihai Plain and the mountains of central and southern Shandong.
