This small picturesque town was founded in 1582 as a trading post. Despite losing out on trade to other coastal towns, ten devastating fires and ransacking by Russian troops in 1721 Hudiksvall have managed to remain an important regional town. During the 18th century it was labeledGlada Hudik(English: Happy Hudik) due to its friendliness and lively social life and the term has stuck since then.
