Huacachina Travel Guide — Things to Do, Food & Hotels

village in Peru

About Huacachina

Legend says that every year a mermaid living in the laguna takes one man. The inability of some Peruvians to swim seems a more likely explanation of the yearly drownings. Other people speculate that the cause of the frequent drownings is that swimmers' muscles cramp when the warm water on the top of the oasis mixes with cooler water below. The lake was created by natural seepage from the underground aquifers, but the nearby well-drilling limited the supply considerably. To compensate for the loss, and (probably mainly) preserve the oasis as a destination for tourists, local business groups began pumping water into the lake in 2015.
