About Guanacaste National Park
The park covers an area of 33,796 km². Guanacaste National Park was declared part of theCosta Rica national parkssystem in 1994. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. The park has three distinct types of landscape, known as theMaritza, Pitilla, andCacaoareas. Maritza is the foothills of the Orosi volcano. Its forests transition from wet to dry and is home to many bird species as well as the collared peccary. The Pitilla area is rainforest located near La Cruz. It's densely wooded trails offer the chance to see a number of tropical birds and miradors provide views of Lake Nicaragua in the distance.
