Greater Hobart takes in a diverse area that roughly correlates to the local government areas of Hobart City, Glenorchy City, Brighton, Clarence and Kingborough. The regional towns were once independent but many have grown closer as urban sprawl connected them. Hobart is Australia's second oldest city, settled in 1804 by Colonel David Collins.
