Granadilla de Abona is a town in a municipality with the same name, which also includes neighbouring townsSan IsidroandEl Médano(The Sand Dune). The municipality had a population of about 50,000 in 2019. The towns name dates back to Guanche eras, withAbonareferring to a Guanchemenceyatoor kingdom that existed here before the island was conquered by theSpanishin the late 15th century. Abona was founded in 1445 and ruled by Atguaxoña, son of Axerax, whose son survived the conquest of Tenerife and was renamed Alonso Gonzalez after being baptized.
