Elhovo (EL-ho-vo) lies on the left bank of the Tundzha river (TOON-jah), the most significant tributary of the larger Maritsa that drains theUpper Thracian Plain. The town is close to several protected natural areas and archeological sites related to the ancient Thracians. The annual tides of theriver Tundzhais part of the natural ecosystem of the three reserves located next to each other around the town of Elhovo. Tunzha is the largest tributary of the river of Maritsa, which flows into it on Turkish territory. It springs from the central part of Stara Planina mountain east of Botev peak.
