About Edenton (North Carolina)

A group of settlers drifted down from the Jamestown Colony in Virginia in 1658 and established Edenton Colony (which would become "the Towne of Queen Anne's Creek" before becoming a whole bunch of other things). In a similar vein, the town boasts the oldest house in the state. After these first starts Edenton moved on to become the second capital of provincial North Carolina from 1722 to 1743, and saw a litany of historical figures in one form of another. For instance, Joseph Hewes, signer of the Declaration of Independence and first Secretary of the Navy, along with James Iredell, youngest Supreme Court Justice at age 38, and his son, James Iredell Jr, former US Senator and governor of North Carolina, were all born here.
