After the independence from theSpanish Empirein 1581, the Netherlands created a colonial empire on its own. The Dutch Empire was different from some otherEuropeanempires at the time, inasfar it was mostly centred around individual trading posts, rather than large areas of land (Indonesiaand the Cape Colony were the exceptions). The Dutch colonisation was divided into two companies: theDutch East India Company, officially the United East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie; VOC) operating in Africa and Asia, and theDutch West India Company(Geoctrooieerde Westindische Compagnie; GWCorWestindische Compagnie; WIC) in theAmericas.
