About Driving in Japan

The first hurdle to driving in Japan is licensing. If you do not have a Japanese license, you must have a valid International Driving Permit(IDP) from a1949 Geneva Convention on Road Trafficcountry to be able to drive. In addition, driving licenses from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan can be used if you have an accredited Japanese translation. TheJAF's websitehas more information, and offers translation services for some national licenses both in their branch offices all over the country and online (though you must be in Japan even for the online service). Your own country's automobile club equivalent may offer similar services outside of Japan, if you need to hit the ground running. If your country is on neither of these lists, you cannot legally drive in Japanwi
