About Cotija
The town traces itscolonial historyto its founding in 1575 as a single ranch. Additional colonists arrived about 10 years later. The area grew slowly as a cattle ranching community. They built a small chapel in the early 17th century but didn't get a permanent priest until 1730. In the 21st century, the town has struggled with organized crime as drug cartels moved in imposing lawlessness and disorder.
