The town's original name was Orange—a rather confusing name given the fact that Florida is also home toOrange CityandPort Orange—but was renamed in 1882 after William Chipley. Although the city has a subtropical climate, in early 1985 it recorded a temperature of2°F (−17°C); this is one of the lowest recorded temperatures in the state of Florida, and the lowest recorded temperature in Florida during the month of January.
