About Chennai
A coastal site that has been inhabited since the Stone Age, what is now Chennai was ruled by the Three Crowned Kings (Chola, Chera and Pandya dynasties) for most of its history. In medieval times, it came within the control of the Vijayanagara Empire. Chennai is associated with one of the twelve apostles inChristianity, Thomas. He is believed to have gone to evangelise in India and died in Mylapore, today a neighbourhood of Chennai. The two modern suburbs of Chennai, St Thomas Mount and Santhome, were named in Thomas' honour. In 1522, the Portuguese came to the area, built a port and accordingly named itSão Toméafter Saint Thomas. Chennai the modern city was founded by the British East India Company in 1639. The company purchased the land from the localNayakor chieftain on 22 August 1639,
