About Burhanpur
There is a rich history connected to this city. Excavations in this city unearthed artifacts dating back to the pre-historic ages. Burhanpur was an important city under the Rashtrakuta rulers. Burhanpur was discovered in 1388 by Malik Nasir Khan, a ruler of the Farooqi dynasty and named the city after Sufi saint Shaikh Burhan-Ud-Din. Later it became the capital of the Khandesh dynasty. Miran Adil Khan II, a king of this dynasty, built a significant number of forts in this city. In 1601, Mughal Emperor Akbar annexed Khandesh sultanate and Burhanpur came under Mughal rule, becoming the capital of Khandesh province.
