Buba Travel Guide — Things to Do, Food & Hotels
city in southern Guinea-Bissau
About Buba
During his presidency of Guinea-Bissau (2000-2003), Kumba Yala planned to move the capital city to Buba. Those plans were dropped after he was deposed in a coup d'état. Construction is under way for a deepwater port that could host three 70-tonne vessels at any given time. It is being built by Angola Bauxite to export bauxite. Buba is inhabited mainly by the ethnic groups of Beafadas and Mandingo, and there is considerable minority Fulani, Balanta, Manjacos and roles, as well as descendants of Portuguese. The local economy is based on fishing, agriculture and trade. Rice, peanuts and maize are planted and shifting agriculture is practiced , which uses fires, a practice that threatens the endemic forest of this region.
