Broadway is a road with a history reaching back to pre-Columbian times. TheWickquasgeck trail, used by the Native American people by the same name (who lived in the region), followed more or less the same routing as present-day Broadway. TheDutch, who were the first Europeans in the region called itHeeren Wegh(Gentlemen's Way) orHeeren Straat(Gentlemen's Street), and as it becameBritish, they called it Broadway due to it being unusually wide. Broadway has throughout the city's history been a lively street and major thoroughfare.
