Bakhmut Travel Guide — Things to Do, Food & Hotels
city in Donetsk region, Ukraine
About Bakhmut
The city's name is sometimes written as Bachmut. From 1924 to 2016, it was known asArtemivsk(Ukrainian: Артемівськ) orArtyomovsk(Russian: Артёмовск) after the Soviet revolutionary Fyodor Sergeyev, better known by his nickname "Comrade Artyom". Ukraine passed a de-communization law in 2015 in the wake of the 2014 Euromaidan Revolution, outlawing the display of all Soviet and communist symbols. Accordingly, the city was re-named back to Bakhmut, though Russian media and supporters of Russia still use the old Soviet-era name. The towns of Chasiv Yar and Soledar are included in the Bakhmut municipality.
