About Australian Convict Sites
One of the most distant colonies of the British Empire, during the 18th and 19th centuries penal colonies were set up around Australia. During the 80 years of this practice, some 162,000 convicts were transported from Britain to Australia. These penal colonies were located around Australia, but concentrated in New South Wales and Tasmania, and today there are more than 3,000 such sites remaining in the country. In 2010 UNESCO inscribed 11 of these sites on the world heritage list.
