About Almaty
Almaty was the capital of Kazakhstan until the city ofAstanawas declared to be the new capital of Kazakhstan. Under Soviet rule, it was known asAlma-Ata. Following the independence of Kazakhstan, the city was re-named "Almaty" in 1993. The city is relatively modern, laid out on a grid pattern, so if you're going uphill, you're probably going south. It is relatively inexpensive by international standards. The people are friendly and hospitable; there's also a significant expat community.
